Your Life Counts responds to requests for help, guidance and support from youth and families living in indigenous communities all across North America. As an agency we have spoken in communities such as Six Nations of the Grand River, Gananoque, Kanesatake, Sioux Ste Marie and communities further west to British Columbia.
YLC resources have been translated into indigenous languages and distributed online with our permission by the National Aboriginal Health Organization (N.A.H.O.) There is considerable opportunity for collaboration and YLC continues to explore and develop relationships and opportunities. Our desire is to save lives from suicide and that is our bottom line.
Youth suicide rates in our indigenous communities are at least 6 times the national average. Suicide rates generally across the age ranges evidence an increased risk of suicide in our indigenous communities to the extent that we should be very concerned. Much more can and should be done to save precious lives from suicide.
YLC will continue to research and develop ways forward for this important program in collaboration with our indigenous peoples, their families and their communities.
